Mike Fernino
Mike has been around music all of his life. His father, Michael Fernino Sr., an accomplished musician and music educator, started teaching him piano and accordian at the age of 4. Mike Jr. continued to develop his skills until, at the age of 11, he became a state and regional champion at music competitions. During his early teenage years, Mike’s musical interests started to change when he was first introduced to the mobile DJ industry.
During the early 1980’s, Mike was captivated by the thrill of break dance music and the mixing of 2 records together. In order to learn more, Mike volunteered to setup and breakdown equipment for several of his friends, who had recently started mobile DJing at local school dances.
When Mike turned 16, his parents held a birthday party for him. Mike’s friends, who were asked to DJ the event, later turned over the controls to him as a birthday gift. It was at this moment that Mike’s DJ career actually began. Mike had done so well at his own party, that a friend asked him to DJ their next school dance. With a rented sound system and a crate of records, Mike DJed the first of many events to come. Later that year, Mike and his father founded Music In Motion Entertainment which has grown to a staff of 14 DJs and does over 500 events per year.
Mike also embarked on a very successful nightclub career. Known as “Magic Mike,” he performed regularly at nightclubs throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island. This included clubs like, D’Whitton’s, Nitelife, Galaxy, Atlantis II, and Kangaroo’s. Mike landed a recurring spot as a guest DJ on WKSS Kiss 95.7’s “Kiss Club.” In 1998, at the International DJ Times Expo in Atlantic City, Mike was honored to be a featured DJ at Club Deja Vu.
Mike stays very involved within the mobile DJ industry. He served as the Director for the Connecticut Professional Disc Jockey Association (CPDA) from 1998 to 2000. He founded DJ Idea Sharing in April of 2001. He was also instrumental in the concepting and forming of the Professional Disc Jockeys of New England (PDJNE) and was the very first charter member in 2003.
Mike is currently a member of the American Disc Jockey Association (ADJA), the Connecticut Professional Disc Jockey Association (CPDA), the Professional Disc Jockeys of New England (PDJNE), and the Massachusetts Association of DJs & Mobile Entertainers (MADJAM). He can also be seen speaking at various DJ events across the country as part of his DJ Idea Sharing project. Mike can currently be heard via his various podcasts on the DJ Idea Sharing Podcast Network and be seen moderating topics at the DJ Idea Sharing forum.
